Who is Marco Yandle?
Marco is 20 years old and will soon turn 21. He is from a close-knit family, with his mother and younger sister being his primary supports. His father was a significant mentor during his childhood, particularly encouraging his football aspirations. His father was also the disciplinarian in the family. He has no history of alcohol or substance abuse and has kept a clean criminal record until now.
- Academic and Leadership: Marco did well in school and served as the vice-college captain in year 12.
- Volunteer Work: He has been a volunteer football coach for juniors.
- Work Experience: Marco has held various hospitality jobs to support himself while studying at university.
He was studying mechanical engineering at the University of Adelaide and living at home with his parents and sister before his arrest. He plans to work in the family carpentry business to save money and support himself when he returns to university.
His Offence:
On the night of 19 February 2023, Marco and Keith were at their home in Kudla when they noticed an intruder in their shed. The shed was at the back of their house, it also contained a cannabis crop and hydroponics equipment.
Location:
Kudla is situated approximately 35 kilometres north of the Adelaide city centre. It is classed as semi-rural area with a small population. The community is characterised by large residential properties, hobby farms, and agricultural activities.
The suburb is accessible by the Gawler railway line, with the Kudla railway station serving the area. Major roads such as Main North Road provide road connectivity to nearby suburbs and Adelaide.
The Murder:
Keith Yandle went to the shed armed with his rifle, Marcus followed not too far behind armed with a baseball bat and holding a torch.
Once inside the shed, they confronted the intruder. Hiding in the shed was Steven Murphy, a father of two, recently diagnosed with cancer. Leading up to this night, Steven had been living on the streets homeless in the local area. His kids lived in a house not far from the Yandles.
Keith and Marcus Yandle did not know who Steven was.
The interaction between the three men were recorded on the Yandle's family closed circuit video. The recording was later found by police.
Steven can be seen, unarmed, speaking to Keith who was still armed with his rifle and Marcus was standing next to his Dad, shining the torch on Steven. Steven was asked to empty his pockets and he handed his phone over to Marcus. Marcus got Steven to unlock his phone and both Marcus and Keith looked through its contents.
After this exchange, Keith fired four shots at close range at Steven, killing him.
After the shooting, Keith dug a hole inside the shed to bury Steven's remains and Marcus hid Stevens phone and other belongings. They also dumped Steven's wallet on the side of the road to divert attention from themselves.
Arrest:
During interviews with police, Marcus denied ever seeing Steven before, he denied hearing a gun shot and said he had no knowledge of a firearm being on the property. These were all lies to help protect his father.
We hope to hear more details during his fathers sentencing hearing.
Sentencing:
Following Marcus's arrest he was refused bail and spent 15 months, two weeks and four days in prison. However, he was granted a suspend sentence on condition that he enters into a bond to be of good behaviour for two years in the amount of $500.
I will keep an eye out for more information has Keith is sentenced. Feel free to reach out if you have anything to add to the story.
